Get It How We Live:Girls In The Hood 2(10)

“I know, babe.” Gently he placed kisses along her shoulder.

“I think what hurts the most is that every time I get Layla in my arms I imagine her as my own, and then I realize that if this shit continues that I won’t be able to have one.”

Andrew could feel how tense she had become and wrapped his arms around her, mashing his cheek with hers. He held her tight and promised, “We can go to one of the Psych majors on campus, baby. It’s cheaper and it’s discreet. They’re badass I heard, and it counts as experience. We just need someone to analyze what’s going on and see what we can do to help.”

“How?” she cried, and he could feel her tears against his own cheek. “I don’t remember what happened aside from the fact that I was grabbed and I woke up in a hospital.”

“You were also abused mentally and emotionally by that dick that swore that he took care of you, babe.”

“Maybe you’re right, but I don’t want to talk about it.”

“If you keep it bottled up then it’s going to destroy you. You know that.”

“I don’t want that.”

“Then let’s do it.” He let her go and rounded the bed to kneel in front of her, and took her hands into his own. “Let’s go and see one of them and get to the root of it. Baby, I hate not being able to share you in the most intimate of ways and it’s hard. But I know that it’s something deep that’s causing this to happen, so I’d rather be patient and figure this thing out. No matter how long it takes.”

She threw her arms around his neck and kissed his lips. “I knew I loved you for a reason.”

Though Andrew smiled, he felt like shit on the inside.

Leslie woke at exactly 7:30AM to bathe her baby girl and prepare her for the day. After she sat her in her highchair for a feeding of hot cereal, there was a knock at the door. Her life had become a schedule and she almost knew exactly who could be knocking on her door and what they wanted. And as expected, it was a neighbor there who attended her college. Leslie took the list that the young woman had in her hand and had gone into her bedroom and hall closet to bag all of what she needed. When she returned she said, “That’s an even thirty.”

“I knew it,” the young woman giggled and handed Leslie 6 $5 bills.

She took it and closed the door, and had gone back to her baby with a smile. She folded her fives and stuffed them inside her bra, close to the pit of her arm and picked up Layla’s spoon. “Back to you, fatness,” she grinned.

Thanks to Leslie and Ace’s skin tones, Layla came out a beautiful dark brown. Her cheeks were chubby and she had her mother’s dimples. Though she hadn’t had much hair, Leslie would always mousse it with baby oil to make it curl up and put a headband on her that would always have a pretty bow on it. She was Leslie’s motivation, her world, her reason for breathing. So what Ace didn’t appreciate what she’d done, but with the solid $30 she just made within a matter of minutes, it hadn’t been bullets flying over her head or a fiend trying to rob her. She could thank her daughter for that. For teaching her how to play it safe.

Another knock had come and Leslie looked up at the hand clock on her bar behind her daughter and narrowed her eyes at it. “Who the fuck could that be?” she questioned aloud. She gently stuffed Layla’s spoonful of cereal into her mouth and cleaned her lips with the edge of the spoon before she handed her daughter her bottle off of the dining room table so that she could drink it herself. Then she rose from her seat, confused, and opened the door without looking through the peephole.

Leaning against the pane of her door was the father of her daughter, looking down at her with an unreadable expression on his face.

“If you came to argue, I ain’t doin’ that in front of my daughter, and I gotta finish feeding her so I can her to daycare and me to school,” she said lazily. It appeared that her wall was taken down and that she wouldn’t fight with him. But he knew better than to trust that. “What do you want? Do you want to see Layla? Because you can do that. She probably needs to be changed and I need to get ready for class within the next two minutes, so knock yourself out.” She stepped aside and let him in, and closed the door when he entered.
