Chapter 1

“Where the hell have you been?” Jerome’s mother asked him once he answered the phone. “When I call you, you answer the damn phone.” she said with much aggravation.

Jerome sighed; he wasn’t in the mood.

“I’m sorry, Mama. What’s up?” He asked. “What’s so important?

“Have you talked to An’Draya?”

“Not since the party, why mom? I’m not feeling her right now.”

“You need to give her a call son.”

“For what, Ma? I’m trying to avoid that headache.”

“You’re stupid just like you father! Did you forget that she was carrying your child Jerome? There was an accident at the school yesterday.”

“What you mean an accident?” He asked. He wondered if that was why everyone was calling him yesterday.

“She lost the baby Jerome. She was at work, and she started gushing blood, and she fell out and hit her head. She was rushed to the hospital.”

“This is all my fault.” He whispered to himself. “What hospital is she at?”

“I’m not sure if she’s still there; they were going to release her today, but I went to see her at Baylor Hospital.”

“Alright, Mama.” He said and quickly ended the phone call.

“Can I have the room number for An’Draya Alexander?” Jerome asked, impatiently,

“I’m sorry sir, but she was discharged an hour ago.”

“Damn. Okay. Thank you, ma’am.”

He had balloons and a card for her once he saw her. He felt so awful for not being there and for not allowing his pride and ego to step in. He hurried to his car and dialed Draya’s number.

“Hello.” Draya finally answered after the 3rd call.

“What’s up baby? How you feeling? Where you at?” He rattled off all at the same time.

“I’m fine Jerome.” she answered, nonchalantly.

“Where you at baby? You at your house?”

“What you mean why? My mama called and told me everything. I’m on my way over.”

“Why Jerome?” she asked and blew air from her mouth. “Where were you yesterday when I needed you? I’m busy just like you were too busy for me.” She said and hung up.

He immediately called back.

“Baby, I’m sorry.” He blurted out before giving her chance to speak. “I fucked up and allowed that nigga to knock me off my square. I’m sorry.”

“I don’t care Jerome.”

“Why you tripping’ Draya? I’m here.”

Draya laughed at laugh that said get real.

“I’m tripping? I was in the hospital till this morning, and you’re just now reaching out to me. We lost our child, Jerome, and not one time did you answer the phone. Where were you?” she asked.

“Dray.” He opened up his mouth to speak but was interrupted.

“It doesn't even matter Jerome.” She hung up and turned her phone off.

Jerome sped to Draya’s house. He couldn’t and wouldn’t let them end like this. He truly loved Draya and wanted her to be his wife. He knows that he fucked up, and he was going to try his best to make it right.

“Mommy, Mommy!!” Mehki screamed, excitingly, as he ran towards her. “You’re woke.” She couldn’t lift nothing over ten pounds, so she leaned down to kiss and hug him.

“Hey y’all.” Draya spoke to her mother, Tamica, and Caymin. They had been keeping an eye on Mehki while Draya rested.

“Hey baby. How you feeling?” Draya’s mother, Ms. Cheryl, asked.

“I’m fine, Mama. My head isn't hurting as bad.”

They all began to embark on full conversation when they heard a knock at the door.

“I got it.” Draya said, walking towards her front door. When she opened the door, she quickly became irritable. Why was he even here? “What are you doing here? Mehki your father is here.”

Kam’Ron invited himself in, and everyone looked at him with a disgusted look. His eye had a minor cut and bruise under it, and it was clear that it came from the fight. He noticed their scowl and gave them the same menacing look back.

“What’s up Mehki?” He asked his son.
