Is Love Enough(3)

The hostess stomped away like she was upset. Her actions were confusing the shit out of me, but I couldn’t be focused on her. My focus was on having Lance around.

Twirling my Fuzzy Navel with my straw, I didn’t have much of anything to say, but Lance said, “So, tell me more about this Tre nigga.”

“Who is Tre? If I can remember, I never started to tell you about him,” I replied with a very straight face.

He smirked as he took a gulp of his Corona. He knew that I was full of shit. He was always privy to the things that I had going on in my life. But since he started the conversation of Tre, he would have to further it.

“Come on Brandy, I know that ya’ll been dating for about 5 or 6 months. That nigga from over there on Congress in K-town, but he’s always over there by your parents’ house because his mama lives over there,” Lance said.

“So, you stalking me now, huh?” I asked.

“I’m not stalking you Brandy. I told you, I know everything about MY GIRL.”

“Well, maybe you should tell me about Erika from the North Side! I heard that ya’ll are practically married and shit, and that you wifing that bitch, real talk,” I mentioned. I had done some investigating on his ass, while he thought that he was the only one knowing shit.

“No, man,” he answered, while looking directly in my eyes. “I broke up with her about 3 months ago. The trick was stealing my money, and fucking my nigga Malik. I ain’t wifing that hoe; not at all. She ain’t EVEN worth it.” He looked disgusted at the mention of Erika.

“So, tell me more about this Tre nigga?” He pressed the issue.

“It seems to me that you know all about him already.”

“No, for-real Brandy. What’s up with that nigga? I hear that he a lil bitch, who likes to talk crazy, and jump hard at everybody. I heard that ya’ll always arguing, and that nigga grabbed yo arm in public one night. So, I can only imagine what ya’ll go through in the crib. And I heard that he been fucking with that chicken, Alex, off yo old block. I also heard that he be over on the Ave., slinging for Magic. And you know that ain’t the life for you,” Lance said a mouthful. Obviously he had heard a lot!

“Damn, you know TOO MUCH!” Shocked to hear that he knew so much about Tre, but even more shocked to hear that this nigga was cheating on me with Alex’s ugly, beat-down ass, made me feel some type of way. I put my head down in shame, then I looked up quickly and decided not to sweat what I couldn’t control.

“Has he ever put his hands on you? Because I swear to God, Brandy, if that nigga ever touched you inappropriately… I’ll KILL HIM.” Lance was going too far now. We hadn’t dated in years, and although we would probably always love each other, killing was not necessary. I think the Corona was going to his head.

“That nigga ain’t that damn crazy.” I decided to lie and diffuse the situation.

When, actually, that nigga was crazy. One night, about a month ago, when things was crazy on the block, I hadn’t heard from him in 2 days. When I finally did hear from him, he came over my house drunk and high, and slapped me. No warning, no talking, no arguing—that nigga walked in my fucking door and slapped the shit out of me. I staggered but I didn’t fall, and I reached back, grabbed a vase off of my fireplace and knocked his ass COLD out. I clearly put that nigga in the hospital. I guess you can say that even though I wasn’t in-love with him and he hit me first, I felt bad for putting his sorry ass in the hospital, and that’s why we are still together. I thought about the situation.

“Yeah, okay,” he said sarcastically. “Don’t let me hear about it. I’m a knock that nigga off his block, for real,” Lance interrupted my thoughts with his declaration.

“Why are you so interested in who I’m with? You left me completely alone 3 years ago, and I haven’t heard from you in a whole year. So, why does it matter who I’m with and what I’m doing?” I questioned, becoming irritated and flattered at the same time.

“Because I never stopped feelin’ you. I always loved you; I just felt like you were doing me wrong, and I couldn’t bear to look you in the face every day like everything was okay. You weren’t very sure about being with me, and I couldn’t show you that I was waiting; even though I really was waiting, my pride wouldn’t let me show that shit. I’m always feelin’ you, for real, but I’m a man with pride. The way you acted was unacceptable to a person like me,” Lance ranted, like his shit was squeaky clean. He always did that, though. He could tell you everything that you did wrong, but he would rarely own up to anything that he did wrong.
