Avoidables 5(32)

By: Rachel Medhurst

‘My mother told me when I was five that I could never take my shirt off in public. When I had my physical test at fifteen, she covered the mark over with her makeup and somehow it worked. I’m sorry I’ve hidden it from you all this time.’

I shook my head and shushed him as a sob escaped his lips. I put my arm around him and looked into his eyes.

‘Henry, you don’t ever have to hide from me. It was bad enough for me having to deal with it somewhere it’s acceptable, let alone you having to be afraid for most of your life.’

‘It’s ironic though, isn’t it?’ he said.

I smiled gently but then felt myself frown. I didn’t really get what he was saying.

‘What’s ironic?’

He laughed then and wiped his eyes. When he pulled his hand away, he leant forward and kissed me very gently. It was a gratitude kiss and I let him do it. He then wrapped his arm around me and closed his eyes, ready to go back to sleep.

‘All along you thought you’d been sleeping with a Perfect, but technically, I’m an Avoidable, just like you.’
