Chapter 53: ✦City Of Glass✦

Chapter 53: ✦City Of Glass✦

The high-speed train from London to Paris was quiet. Outside the window, the green fields of England turned into the gray tunnels of the sea, and then finally into the rolling hills of France. For the members of STEL-R, the journey was a chance to breathe.

Kang Joon sat by the window. His eyes were closed, but he wasn’t sleeping. He was looking at the blue screen in his mind.

[Buff Active: Cultural Adaptability – Level 1]

The system was quiet, but its presence was steady. Kang Joon felt a new kind of power in his mind. He didn’t just know the words of the French language; he felt the "vibe" of the city. He understood the elegance and the sharp edge of the fashion world before he even stepped off the train.

Beside him, Doh-yun was looking at a fashion magazine. His pink hair was hidden under a silk scarf, a gift from a fan in London. He looked different now. The sadness from the scandal was mostly gone, replaced by a quiet strength.

"Jae-hyun-hyung," Doh-yun said, pointing to a photo of a tall model. "Do we really have to walk like that tonight?"

Jae-hyun leaned over. "Not exactly. We walk like STEL-R. We aren’t models. We are the guests of honor."

The House of Valois

The "House of Valois" was one of the oldest fashion brands in Paris. They were known for black lace, silver chains, and sharp suits. For their new "Global Youth" campaign, they had chosen STEL-R. It was a massive deal. In the past, only veteran idols got these invitations. For a rookie group to be the faces of Valois was unheard of.

The van pulled up to a grand building made of white stone and gold glass. Crowds of photographers were already there.

"Remember," Kang Joon said as the door opened. "Don’t look at the cameras. Look through them. We are the fire in this city."

The members stepped out. The flashbulbs were a constant, humming wall of light.

Kang Joon felt his posture lock into place. His chin lifted. His eyes became sharp. Around him, the other four members followed his lead. They moved as one unit, a wall of black silk and silver jewelry.

Doh-yun walked with a new confidence. He didn’t hide behind Kang Joon. He stood tall, his pink hair a bright splash against the monochrome building. Gun-woo and Han-bin moved with a relaxed grace, while Jae-hyun looked like he had been born in a Paris palace.

Inside, the gala was filled with the smell of expensive perfume and old wood. Famous actors, designers, and socialites moved through the room like colorful birds.

"They are all staring," Han-bin whispered, keeping his smile fixed.

"Let them," Kang Joon replied in French, his voice smooth and low. "That’s why we’re here."

The Rival: Lucid

As they moved toward the center of the hall, the atmosphere changed. A group of five young men was standing by the champagne fountain. They were dressed in white and gold—the opposite of STEL-R’s black and silver.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[Rivalry Event Detected]

[Group: LUCID]

[Agency: Neo-Star Media]

[Probability of Conflict: 88%]

Kang Joon recognized them instantly. Lucid was the newest group from Neo-Star, the biggest agency in Korea. They had debuted two months before STEL-R. They were known for their "Perfect Prince" image. They were STEL-R’s biggest competitors for the "Rookie of the Year" award.

The leader of Lucid, a tall man named Xavier, stepped forward. He had a cold, perfect face and eyes that didn’t hold any warmth.

"So, the ’Basement Monsters’ made it to Paris," Xavier said in Korean. His voice was loud enough for the nearby guests to hear. "I heard you had to start a riot on live TV just to keep your maknae. How very... dramatic."

The members of STEL-R stiffened. Gun-woo’s eyes flashed with anger, but Kang Joon put a hand on his arm.

"Drama is for the stage, Xavier," Kang Joon said. He switched to French, his voice carrying clearly to the French designers standing nearby. "We are here to celebrate art and fashion. I hope Lucid can keep up with the elegance of the evening."

Xavier’s smile faltered. He didn’t speak French. He looked at the French guests, who were now looking at him with confused expressions.

One of the Valois designers, a woman named Madame Celeste, approached them. "Kang Joon-ssi," she said in French, her eyes bright with interest. "Your French is beautiful. And your group... you have a very ’dangerous’ energy. It is perfect for our black lace collection."

"Thank you, Madame," Kang Joon replied, bowing slightly. "We believe that fashion is like music—it should tell a story of survival."

Xavier stood there, silenced by a language barrier and a level of poise he didn’t expect. STEL-R had won the first round without raising their voices.

The Charisma Battle

The night continued with a seated dinner. STEL-R was placed at the main table, while Lucid was seated further away. It was a clear sign of who the brand favored.

But the real challenge came after dinner. The Creative Director of Valois, a man named Pierre, stood on the small stage.

"Tonight, we have the future of music with us," Pierre said. "I want to see how the ’Echo’ and the ’Prince’ handle our new concept. A short walk, a short moment of presence. Show us what you represent."

It was an impromptu charisma battle. Lucid went first.

They walked the small runway with perfect, robotic precision. They looked like expensive statues. They were beautiful, but there was no soul in their movement. The audience clapped politely.

Then, it was STEL-R’s turn.

Kang Joon looked at his members. "Don’t walk like them. Walk like you’re taking back what belongs to you."

The music changed to a deep, heavy bassline—a remix of their song HOT!.

Jae-hyun went first. He moved with a cold, sharp elegance that made the air feel like it was freezing. Then came Han-bin and Gun-woo, their movements synchronized and powerful.

Then, Doh-yun stepped out. He didn’t look like a maknae. He looked like a rebel. He stopped at the end of the runway, looked directly at Pierre, and gave a slow, confident smirk. He wasn’t the "mascot." He was the heart of the flame.

Finally, Kang Joon walked out.

[Skill Activation: Stage Commander – Maximum Output]

The room went silent. Kang Joon didn’t just walk; he owned the space. Every step was deliberate. Every glance was a command. He reached the end of the runway and didn’t pose. He simply stood there, his silver chains glowing under the chandeliers.

The silence lasted for three seconds before the room exploded. It wasn’t polite clapping. It was a roar of approval. Pierre was on his feet, his eyes wide.

"That," Pierre shouted. "That is the Valois spirit! Not perfection, but power!"

The Mystery Revealed

After the walk, STEL-R moved to a balcony to catch the cool Paris air. The Eiffel Tower was glowing in the distance, a giant lattice of gold.

"We did it," Gun-woo panted, leaning against the stone railing. "Did you see Xavier’s face? He looked like he swallowed a lemon."

"He was trying to play a game he didn’t understand," Jae-hyun said, adjusting his silver ring.

Doh-yun was looking at his phone. "The photos are already online. Everyone is talking about the ’Black and White’ battle. They’re saying Lucid looks like a wedding cake and we look like a storm."

Kang Joon laughed, but then he remembered the message from London.

"Don’t get too comfortable."

He looked around the balcony. A man was standing in the shadows by the door. He was wearing a Valois suit, but he wasn’t a guest. He was a staff member from Neo-Star Media—Lucid’s agency.

The man stepped into the light. It was Min-ho, a trainee who had been in the basement with Kang Joon years ago. Min-ho had been the "Golden Boy" of the training center, but he had been cut for bullying other trainees. He had disappeared for two years, only to resurface as the Creative Director’s assistant for Neo-Star.

"Long time no see, Joon," Min-ho said, his voice grating. "You haven’t changed. Still the hero. Still the one everyone looks at."

"Min-ho," Kang Joon said, his voice flat. "I thought you left the industry."

"I just moved behind the curtain," Min-ho replied, stepping closer. "Xavier and Lucid... they were my project. You made them look like fools tonight. But don’t think a fashion show is a win. The ’Rookie of the Year’ award is coming up. And I know all the secrets of that basement, Joon. I know what you had to do to survive."

[SYSTEM WARNING]

[Warning: Targeted Defamation Predicted]

"The basement isn’t a secret, Min-ho," Kang Joon said, stepping forward until he was inches from his old rival. "We talk about it in our interviews. We wear it like armor. If you want to try and use our past against us, go ahead. But remember—we survived the basement. We can survive you."

Min-ho’s face twisted in anger. "We’ll see. Paris is just a stop. Seoul is where you’ll fall."

He turned and walked back into the gala.

The Vow

The members of STEL-R stood in the Paris night, the Eiffel Tower sparkling behind them. The victory of the night felt a bit heavier now. They knew the world was getting bigger, and the enemies were getting more personal.

"He’s just bitter," Han-bin said, though he looked worried.

"He’s a ghost," Kang Joon said, looking at his team. "Ghosts can’t hurt us unless we let them haunt us. We have the showcase tomorrow. We have the fans. That’s all that matters."

Doh-yun reached out and put his hand on the railing. "We’re not the ’Basement Monsters’ anymore, hyung. We’re STEL-R."

"Exactly," Kang Joon said.

He looked at the system screen.

[Quest: The Walk of Stars – COMPLETED]

[Reward: Permanent Buff – ’Aura of Mystery’ Integrated]

[New Quest: The Seoul Return – The Rookie Awards]

The Paris lights were beautiful, but Kang Joon was already looking past them. The "Shut It Down" tour was coming to an end, but the real battle for their place in history was just beginning. They had conquered L.A., London, and Paris. Now, they had to go back to where it all started and prove they were the best in the world.

As the boys headed back inside to finish the night, Kang Joon felt a sense of calm. The system was a guide, but his brothers were his strength.

"Let’s go," Kang Joon said. "We have a world to win."
