Chapter 585 585: 585: Unicorn's Horn Shedding, Treatment Ideas
Chapter 585 585: 585: Unicorn's Horn Shedding, Treatment Ideas
Carrying the Stardust with him, John prepared to leave.
Suddenly, his footsteps halted.
He turned back and glanced at the golden little figures sitting around the table after finishing their work.
A thoughtful look appeared in his eyes before he finally turned and walked out of the Constellation Society.
As the door closed, the entrance to the Constellation Society gradually disappeared.
John headed toward Hagrid's hut and ran into Professor Flitwick midway there.
"Good heavens, Wick, when are you finally going to attend my classes? You haven't come even once," Professor Flitwick said.
"I will, Professor."
"Don't just brush me off," Professor Flitwick said warily. "Give me a time."
John thought about it. It really had been a long time since he attended any other classes.
Since he had class tomorrow anyway, John said, "Tomorrow, Professor. I'll come tomorrow."
"You're an important figure now, so don't break your promise," Professor Flitwick added worriedly.
John smiled as he watched the little old man leave.
The old professor really was quite amusing.
Before he even reached Hagrid's hut, John saw Hagrid fiddling with a rather old-looking camera.
"What are you doing with a camera, Hagrid?"
Hagrid's massive fingers made the camera look tiny as he awkwardly tried to operate it. A bright flash burst out, followed by white smoke rising from the flashbulb.
Hagrid excitedly said, "I'm going to photograph the unicorns shedding their horns. You've no idea how rare that is."
"We're probably the first people in three hundred years to witness unicorn horn shedding."
He was incredibly excited. For a magizoologist, nothing was more thrilling than recording magical creatures.
John glanced at the camera creaking in Hagrid's grip and said, "Hagrid, your camera's about to break."
"Oh, blast." Startled, Hagrid accidentally crushed the old camera beyond its limits.
The pile of broken pieces on the ground left Hagrid looking close to tears.
"It's over. I won't be able to get another camera," he said dejectedly.
"It's fine, Hagrid. We're wizards, remember?" John said.
As he spoke, John raised his left hand, a golden ring of light wrapping around his wrist.
A golden magic circle appeared over the shattered camera. John twisted the ring, and the broken camera rapidly reversed itself.
In moments, it had fully restored itself to the state it was in before being crushed.
"John, I swear even Dumbledore couldn't do something like that," Hagrid said, staring at the restored camera without daring to touch it.
John beckoned the camera into his hand and chuckled. "That would truly be an honor."
The two of them headed toward the unicorn habitat.
Along the way, Hagrid kept rambling about how Basil had indeed stopped bothering him after seeing that his beard was gone.
His once-thick beard had now been replaced by a layer of stubble, and it would probably take until next year to grow back into the style Hagrid liked.
On the way, they encountered the Zouwu chasing after furballs.
The giant cat they had rescued was extremely lively, and upon seeing John, it immediately came over demanding affection.
After Grawp launched five furballs in a row without seeing the Zouwu return, one of the furballs ended up crashing into centaur territory and infuriating them.
"Alright, alright, big guy. You should head back now."
John smiled as he rubbed the Zouwu's mane and patted its head, sending it back to play with Grawp.
Grawp had contributed during the Battle of Hogwarts, and following John's suggestion, Slughorn had designated the cave and surrounding area in the Forbidden Forest as Grawp's habitat.
He was also the only giant allowed to remain within Britain.
All the giants who participated in the assault on Hogwarts had been exiled farther north.
Unless they displayed good behavior for an entire century, those giants would never be permitted to return to Britain.
As for the golden head, it had been preserved by the Ministry of Magic and displayed as an exhibit called "Proof of Kingship."
The crown of the giants had forever fallen into wizarding hands.
John chatted casually with Hagrid as they arrived at the unicorn habitat.
After entering, they saw the unicorns waiting outside the enormous tree.
One unicorn walked inside while Clark presided over the sacred ritual.
Inside the hollow tree, the unicorn began shaking its head. The horn, sharp enough to pierce through a giant's foot with ease, trembled like jelly before finally falling off.
The shed horn rapidly hardened and dropped onto a small mountain of unicorn horns.
A beam of light descended from the towering tree, causing a tiny horn to quickly grow from the unicorn's forehead.
Hagrid held his breath, staring at the scene without daring to blink.
As the small horn grew out, the unicorn let out a shrill neigh. The horn grew larger and larger until it became a brand-new unicorn horn.
"Amazing," Hagrid muttered to himself before suddenly realizing, "I forgot to take pictures!"
He hurriedly snatched the camera from John's hand. In his panic, sweat was already pouring down his face.
The second unicorn entered and repeated the same process as before.
John watched the scene with great curiosity toward the tree.
"What role does this tree actually play?"
From what he had learned from Weiwei, this tree was the sacred tree of the unicorns.
Only near such trees could unicorn herds exist.
To the unicorns, this tree was equivalent to a mother or a deity.
Clark noticed the two arriving and lightly leaped down from a stone, landing gracefully.
"John, Hagrid." Clark nodded toward John.
Then he looked at Hagrid and said, "Hagrid, I hope you won't spread those photographs."
"Ah, why not?" Hagrid asked in confusion.
Clark raised his head toward the sacred tree and said, "If others learn our secret, greedy people will stop at nothing to search for unicorn herds and study the secrets of the sacred tree."
For a unicorn, Clark carried the wisdom of an elder.
He did not stop Hagrid from taking photographs, and he clearly understood who had revealed the secret and allowed the two of them inside.
Still, based on his understanding of them, he chose to trust them.
As long as the photographs did not spread, the unicorns would continue acknowledging the two as friends.
John nodded and said, "I'll keep the secret."
Glancing at the camera in Hagrid's hands, John added, "Hagrid, some beautiful things are better left in memory."
"You're right, John."
Though reluctant, Hagrid still lowered the camera.
Compared to exploration, he preferred protecting magical creatures.
John snapped his fingers, and a flash of white light passed over the camera, reducing it into a pile of broken parts.
Clark's expression softened. Lowering his front body slightly, he said, "Thank you for your understanding. You will forever be friends of the unicorns."
The shedding period was still ongoing. After Weiwei shed her old horn, a new one grew in.
She happily bounced over to John and said, "Look at my horn. The spiral patterns mean I'm one year older."
John was happy for her as well. Taking out two bottles of Stardust, he said, "Then we should definitely have a good drink today."
The moment the Stardust was opened, the unicorns became restless. All of them wanted a drink.
Even Clark stared fixedly at the golden liquid inside the bottles.
Hagrid looked somewhat bewildered. He did not remember alcohol being part of a unicorn's diet.
However, Weiwei remained highly wary of Hagrid, because if someone that large tried to steal the drinks, she definitely could not beat him.
In the end, when John left, he took quite a few freshly shed unicorn horns with him, while a large number of unicorns lay collapsed throughout the habitat.
After returning to Hogwarts, John immediately began preparing potions.
He ground the unicorn horns into powder before pouring them into a cauldron.
The Eternal Flame was carefully controlled at a low temperature beneath the cauldron, otherwise it might melt the cauldron entirely.
Opening his palm, John looked at the tear drop, so light it almost seemed nonexistent.
Silver-white light drifted from it like smoke.
"A ghost's tear."
After pondering for a moment, John stored it away.
Raising his hand to summon the book, John stared at the chapter concerning the Blood Curse.
"The variety of Blood Curses makes them difficult to understand, but fundamentally, all of them bring death and misfortune."
John waved his hand again, and the silver-white book appeared in the air.
The book seemed to contain countless pages, flipping continuously for a long time before finally stopping on a section describing souls and curses.
Without stopping, John waved his hand once more.
Reports regarding experiments on curses and souls appeared in midair, continuously scattering out until the entire room was covered.
John said, "It's time to begin treatment for the Blood Curse."
He now had the support of three powerful wizards, along with the assistance of the Potions Master Slughorn. At last, he could officially begin dealing with the Blood Curse.
"I need someone to support my treatment process."
The images of the two Greengrass sisters flashed through John's mind.
He had already examined both of them. Compared to Daphne, Astoria was far more likely to trigger the Blood Curse at some point in the future.
The current plan was still only in its testing phase, so John needed to reduce the risks as much as possible.
Thus, John wrote a letter to Daphne.
