Chapter 83: An Unknown Variable

Rachel and Bella were trying to stay out of sight because they knew that the men in these walls weren’t the only enemies that they had to worry about.

They also had to worry about the zombies roaming outside, Bella had no intentions of escaping but one could say she returned here to retrieve that item that happened to be with Liam when she arrived.

"Are you going to kill me?" Bella asked Rachel directly.

"I don’t know, I have never killed anyone before but I know I wouldn’t feel guilty if I killed you," Rachel said and this brought about a weak smile from Bella.

She expected this answer but it stung a little because she thought that Rachel and her were getting along.

"That is harsh but your feelings aren’t misplaced," Bella said, she could have easily lied to Rachel and kept this fact buried.

Bella was tired of the lies, it was exhausting and she just wanted everything out.

If it meant she would be killed for it then so be it, her husband was dead and despite falling out of love with him, he was still an important part of her life.

Liam had given Bella the file she came to retrieve, he reminded her how much he loved her.

Liam always gave her the benefit of the doubt, he wanted to believe that she wasn’t the woman he had made up in his mind.

She found herself wanting to be reunited with her husband but she also knew that there was more to life so also hoped to cling to it.

But she wanted to do so, she liked the idea of someone having her back the way they had Jason’s back.

That act of selflessness even though they risked losing more if this rescue goes wrong.

"They won’t make it out alive," Bella said.

Rachel was calm and collected, she didn’t let her emotions do the talking for her and that was what set her apart from her pairs.

She wondered if Lillian was safe occasionally and what she would do if anything ever happened to her younger sister.

"What do you mean by that?" Rachel asked with a raised brow.

"It is exactly as you hear, Sam, Clementine and Jason won’t make it out alive.,, They might think they have the upper hand but that is far from the truth..." Bella said.

"You can pull the trigger or get that gun out of my face. I have accepted that I did a shitty thing and I wish to atone for it," Bella said bluntly, Rachel understood that this woman was tricky but she also knew that it was in her best interest to make sure that Jason was okay.

"Do you like him?" Rachel asked Bella out of the blue,

"Huh?" Bella responded because she wasn’t sure what Rachel was asking.

"I mean, do you like Jason?" Rachel made herself clearer and Bella had an indifferent face.

She looked Rachel right in the eyes, sighing.

"Jason is a good guy but I don’t think I like him that way. I do like fucking him though if that counts for something." Bella said and for some reason, Rachel was glad to hear that their attraction was strictly physical.

But she was also a woman, she knew exactly why Rachel was asking this question.

She knew that Rachel was slowly getting drawn in by Jason.

"You like him, don’t you?" Bella asked Rachel but Rachel couldn’t give a certain answer because she didn’t know the answer to it.

Jason was good with Lillian and for some reason, Lillian wasn’t scared of him.

Rachel knew what happened to her sister the last time she trusted a man and she barely knew anything about Jason.

"I don’t know..." Rachel blurted out and just then, they heard growling in the distance.

"Rachel, I’m asking you to give me the benefit of the doubt one last time. After that, you may do anything you want with me," Bella said, Rachel kissed her teeth because she knew she had no choice.

Bella knew the camp better than she and they couldn’t stay out here because of the zombies that were encroaching.

"I have a car..." Bella added. Rachel was skeptical but she owed it to herself to see if this was the case as they all knew how valuable a car would be in these times.

"Fine, move," Rachel said, redirecting her gun from Bella as they went back inside.

Sam was on the floor, he was beaten and clearly in pain, whoever had entered the house was strong enough to defeat Sam in such a short time.

Clementine stood in front of Jason as a shield, she pointed her gun in this person’s direction.

She was ready to pull the trigger, Sam was still on a high from fighting Rodrigo and wanted to see how strong this man was compared to Rodrigo and Sam realized that this man far exceeded his expectations.

Jason felt stupid, he wondered if the quest that Chronos told him about was about this person, it had to be.

The timing was far too convenient and Jason knew they were in danger but there was something off about this man.

He could have killed Sam but he didn’t, and now that Sam was out of it, Jason had to act to defend Clementine.

"Put the gun down," Jason instructed Clementine but she wasn’t taking commands from him, however, she knew he might see something that she couldn’t.

Clementine put away her gun and the man smiled at this gesture as he squatted down.

"You... You’re the one that..." The man said; he was talking to Jason, his gaze looking past Clementine.

"... Freed you," Jason blurted out as the person before them was revealed to be Lorenzo.

Jason sat up despite every muscle in his body aching with pain.

"Why did you do it? Why did you free me?" Lorenzo asked.

Jason knew these options were to help but he also knew that he was in no condition to fight and even if he was in his prime, there was no way he was beating a man that had effortlessly defeated Sam.

"I want to burn this place to the ground..." These blood-curdling words left his lips, and the tone in which it was delivered made the hair on Clementine’s body.

"What was that?" Clementine thought to herself, there was something ominous about Jason and it made her body go on alert but it only ever did that when she was around enemies.

"I will kill them all," Jason muttered.
