Chapter 185: A False Promise?
Chapter 185: A False Promise?
Jason managed to get out of the way, he managed to get Clementine to safety but the problem was getting back.
It was just as he predicted, the zombies swarmed the area, looking for the source of the spilt blood.
Jason was surprised that there were this many but this should be nothing, they could only walk and with the zombies he had encountered so far, this was welcomed.
Jason knew he had to find a way back but the sun was setting, there was no doubt that they weren’t returning to pick them up.
He knew that they had to return before the sun set otherwise things could potentially escalate and he couldn’t risk this.
Clementine was resting, and Jason managed to take the shard of bullets embedded in her body.
The bullets didn’t penetrate deeply, they didn’t hit any vital organs and Jason had to be careful with how he put his fingers in her or he risked causing more damage.
Jason managed to do so with her help and with her wounds bandaged, she was in a stable condition as she wasn’t bleeding out.
"Those bastards... They aren’t returning..." Jason realized but he wasn’t going to give up.
The fragment in him was even stronger, the magnetic force that it had towards the zombies.
Jason knew it wasn’t just her blood that drew them here but he began to wonder what could potentially happen.
Jason also noted that the zombies didn’t seem to gather around the undead, he had never seen it as all the evolved zombies he had encountered so far were all secluded.
Jason needed to test this theory and realized that he couldn’t spend the night here or the whole damn zombies in the area would be gathered here.
Jason looked over at the sleeping Clementine and left the building but not before securing it.
He jumped the window and secured that, he didn’t have any zombie guts on him as this was part of the theory he wished to test.
All the zombies’ attention instantly turned to him, and Jason’s eyes were determined.
He quickly scanned the area, looking for any form of transportation to take them back but there was nothing in sight.
The cars around looked like they didn’t work as they were rusty and this was no surprise considering that the cars were out of commission for quite some time.
Jason began to walk through the area, away from the much slower zombies, they couldn’t catch him despite him only walking.
This was a breath of fresh air, he didn’t know what waited for him but he was more cautious than ever right now.
Jason kept searching the area for anything that could aid him in his conquest to leave the place.
This was a dangerous situation that they found themselves in but Jason couldn’t relent.
"What is this place?" Jason muttered to himself, there was something different about this area.
It gave him an eerie feeling that he couldn’t place, however, this wasn’t what was on his mind right now.
Jason gritted his teeth, he looked around and what he saw was a bicycle but the tyres were flat.
Everything was looking bleak but he soon saw a glimpse of hope as there were spare tyres.
Jason quickly changed the tyre but Clementine had to be strong enough to hold onto him.
He was done in a few minutes and the zombies were yet to close the distance.
Jason mounted the bicycle and for the first time, there was hope.
He reached the building where Clementine was but he saw a car he didn’t recognize parked in front.
Jason, without hesitation, rushed inside the building because there was a chance that this was an enemy.
"Clementine!" Jason exclaimed the moment he barged into the room where she lay.
He saw someone standing in front of her and Jason rushed to tackle the man without hesitation.
The man tumbled onto the ground and Jason was about to deliver the final strike to kill whoever this was.
"Damn, is that how you greet people?" The person was revealed to be Brayden.
"What are you doing here?" Jason asked.
"I came to get you two," Brayden responded but Jason was confused by this.
Why was he here and why did he come alone? Did Andre send them?
"Well? Are you going to keep staring at me or you’re going to help me get her into the car so we can get back home?" Brayden responded, staring Jason dead in the eye.
"I’m glad you came back to get us, man," Jason said with a sigh of relief as he climbed off him.
"There was no way I could leave you guys, you did save us. That would have been a shitty thing to do," Brayden said.
Jason looked around expecting to see someone else in there.
"Where’s Franklin?" Jason requested, assuming this to be his idea but Brayden didn’t respond to this question and instead looked around awkwardly like he was stalling.
"We need to get back, everyone should be waiting for us," Brayden said.
This sounded like an answer to Jason’s question but it wasn’t however Jason didn’t know this.
He smiled, he could not believe that he was to peddle back home on a bicycle.
Brayden’s act of loyalty was what helped them survive this because in reality. If Jason had carried out his plan to travel on a bicycle.
The chances of either him or Clementine dying were extraordinarily high so in a way, Brayden just saved their lives.

Glenn was handling things at the camp, he helped them learn the basics of combat in their absence but there was a particular lady that looked like his dead wife.
He couldn’t help but look at her but Glenn knew it wasn’t her regardless of how badly he wanted it to be her.
Glenn was worried about Jason, Clementine, and Franklin because there were so many things that could go wrong.
This was an unpredictable world and with the addiction of the zombies, it was even more unpredictable.
"Hey, can I talk to you?" Shantel requested an audience with Glenn, Glenn glanced at her body but this wasn’t the kind of body he fancied.
"Sure thing," Glenn responded, he knew one thing was certain and that was the people here loved and respected her.
She had influence and he didn’t know how long the others would take because they, themselves, had stayed here over a week already.
They went to a more secluded area, looking to see what was wrong.
"What’s up?" Glenn asked, his aura was friendly and it was hard to perceive him as a threat.
"I want to thank you," Shantel said.
She could have thanked him outside, it was unnecessary to thank him in private.
"Oh? There is no need for that," Glenn tried to brush it off.
"No, there is no need. You people have changed the camp and for the first time, the people here have hope..." Shantel said.
Glenn was confused why she was thanking him seeing as he was unconscious and recuperating most of the time.
He had nothing to do with this so why was she thanking him; Glenn began to wonder how she intended to show her gratitude.
"I guess... You should thank Jason if you want to thank anyone," Glenn said bluntly, he knew instinctively that Jason had a hand to do with this even though he wasn’t present.
"I have thanked him and that is part of what I want to talk to you about," Shantel said and Glenn sighed the moment he heard this.
He knew that she didn’t just want to thank him but must have had an ulterior motive to go with it.
"Is something wrong?" Glenn asked, sounding concerned.
"Nothing is wrong, I just want to know the kind of man Jason is," Shantel asked, looking rather shy. Her cleavage was hanging out of her shirt as usual with sweat soaking through her shirt.
This made her nipples erect beneath them and Glenn had an idea what her relationship with Jason was. There was no way that Jason wouldn’t be attracted to her.
"Jason is a good man, he brings out the best in people. I have never met another man with as much impact as him, it’s like he sees something that we don’t even know exists," Glenn praised him.
Shantel couldn’t help but smile, she liked that Glenn’s description of Jason matched the image she had of him in her head.
"I’m glad, Jason made me a promise..." Shantel said and Glenn couldn’t help his curiosity.
"A promise?" Glenn questioned to which she nodded before answering.
"He promised to take me back with him," Shantel said, she was trying to establish some sort of friendship with Glenn because, to her, this would make it easier for her to be integrated into their circle.
"Jason promised that?" Glenn thought to himself, he was puzzled because Jason was aware of the procedure that protected the community.
There was no way in hell that Shantel would be accepted into their community so what was Jason thinking? Glenn knew it wasn’t in his place to put a wedge into whatever plan that Jason had.
"Heh! I’m sure everyone would love you back at the community," Glenn said with a reassuring smile, helping Jason to reinforce whatever he promised her.
However, he wanted to know what Jason could want from her to make him promise something as drastic as this.
Night soon came and this brought about an end to the day but with the mission completed, they would all soon be back home... or would they?
